This article will be a weekly series where I normally talk about five guys I’m looking into my lineup and five guys that I’m taking out if at all possible. This week will only be 3 studs and 3 duds on account of the massive amount of teams on bye. These recommendations will primarily matchup-based and will vary greatly from week to week. I plan to try my best to stay away from the studs that you plan on starting anyways and dive a little deeper. All of these recommendations also assume a PPR format but would not change much, if at all, in standard.
Week 8 Studs and Duds
Alshon Jeffrey (PHI) vs SF – Wide receivers and offenses overall have fared very well against San Francisco this year. Alshon Jeffrey has yet to have an amazing blowup game but this could very well be the game. Carson Wentz is playing out of his mind and that only stands to benefit Jeffrey. Both the 49ers and the Eagles have game totals in the 50s the past few weeks which tells you that Alshon could very well be involved this time. I’d would be extremely confident with Alshon as one of my studs this week and look for the trend against San Francisco to continue.
Christian McCaffrey (CAR) @ TB – McCaffrey has been disappointing in the running game this year but still remains heavily involved in the passing game. Luckily, the Bucs are bad against both. The Tampa defense is being torched this season and expect Carolina to pile on this week. Even in McCaffrey struggles to get it going in the rushing game again, it’s not unreasonable for him to see 10 easy targets and turn those into chunk plays and maybe a touchdown. He should be one of your studs and a high RB2 this week.
Jay Ajayi (MIA) @ BAL – Baltimore has struggled against the run lately and Ajayi has struggled running the ball. Let’s hope this works out in Ajayi’s favor. The Ravens got DT Brandon Williams back last week and still struggled to stop the run so this may just a flaw of their defense. The Dolphins line has struggled to block for Ajayi but hopefully, Matt Moore is able to threaten defenses a little more and in turn, create some running lanes for Ajayi. This game is likely low scoring and should feature a hefty workload for Ajayi so I’d still feel confident with him as one of my studs this week.
Jarvis Landry (MIA) @ BAL – Matt Moore is undoubtedly an upgrade to this offense and should give every offensive piece a boost. Just not this week. The Ravens have been great against opposing receivers and passing attacks and I don’t expect that to stop soon. Landry may have some success from the slot but I think he will severely underperform expectations against a great Ravens secondary and you’ll back and be happy you sat him on this dud week.
Doug Martin (TB) vs CAR – Doug Martin has seen his snap percentage increase every week he’s played and that’s great but the Panthers have been great at stopping the run this year. Martin should continue to see more work but it likely won’t matter against this good front seven in Carolina. The game script also isn’t on Martin’s side as the Panthers may be up big and quick on this terrible Bucs defense. Sit Martin if you can to avoid this dud week.
Ameer Abdullah (DET) vs PIT – Ameer Abdullah has been pretty underwhelming this year but he also has yet to give you a week killing game. This week could be that game. The Steelers have been playing great defense this year and their run defense has been especially good. Abdullah will struggle to find success in this game and I would be finding anybody else to play in his place this week as we may be truly disappointed this weekend.
